Joint Letter Hits Its Mark

In response to the joint open letter signed by ESPORG, the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF), and which urged the European Parliament and EU negotiators to agree on realistic and firm deadlines for building safe and secure truck parking areas (SSTPAs) on the core and comprehensive network of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), safe and secure parking was pushed high on the agenda as negotiators met on 14 November 2023 for the TEN-T trilogue.

In addition, truck charging infrastructure was a key issue for discussion in the trilogue. According to Politico, the European Commission wants to address infrastructure issues by using safe and secure parking areas for installing charging points for trucks. By using SSTPAs as hubs for charging. drivers can charge their trucks while taking their necessary rest and the structure of SSTPAs make them convenient locations to place large batteries.
