ESTA is the leading European association for the abnormal road transport and mobile crane rental industry.
On November 23, 2023, ESTA (European Association of Abnormal Road Transport and Mobile Cranes) offered insight into the challenges trucks with abnormal loads face within the logistics industry and specifically within safe and secure parking areas.
Ton Klijn, the director of ESTA, offered participants an explanation of the landscape within the transport industry for abnormal road transport, including obvious obstacles and challenges as well as European policy adaptations. Klijn also focused on proposals to improve the possibilities for abnormal transport to park, including suggestions for safe and secure parking areas to consider such as entrances and exits whose width and height could accommodate abnormal transport and straight paths or lanes for abnormal transport to navigate rather than windy or bendy roads.
“About 2.5% of transport on the road is abnormal and accommodating for this would mean many more opportunities for abnormal truck drivers to rest without any detriment to safe and secure parking area capacity–they always have to reserve a space ahead of time so parking areas know what to expect and if they aren’t using the spaces, regular trucks easily fit into these spaces.” Klijn explained in the webinar. It’s a win-win to accommodate abnormal transport.
