Overcoming Challenges: Success Stories in Truck Parking Development from Hungary and Romania

Noteworthy achievements in the realm of safe and secure truck parking areas (SSTPAs) in Hungary and Romania

A remarkable project, “Creating a network of connected safe and secure parking areas in Hungary and Romania (SecureNetwork)” promoted by Bivak KFT and Trade Trans Combi Romania, both active members of ESPORG, has been successfully concluded, and its impact is not just local but resonates across Europe.

Despite facing challenges that tested the resolve of the project stakeholders, the outcome of this initiative is absolutely successful, underscoring the importance of commitment and adaptability in the face of unforeseen obstacles.

Co-funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program, “SecureNetwork” stands as a vital component of a Global Project aiming to address the scarcity of Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPAs). The project was coordinated by Trade Trans Combi Romania and focused on enhancing road transport safety and security along the Romania-Hungary-Western Europe route.

The project aimed at the creation of a network of SSTPAs between Hungary and Romania, achieving noteworthy milestones such as:

  • The establishment of a new gold-level SSTPA with 170 parking spaces in Kiskunfélegyháza on Hungarian motorway M5;
  • The inauguration of a new gold-level SSTPA with 180 parking spaces at Curtici near the Romanian motorway E 671;
  • Upgrading an existing SSTPA at Nagykanizsa on the Hungarian motorway M7, expanding it from 25 to 35 parking spaces at bronze level standard;
  • Enhancing an existing SSTPA at Hatvan on the Hungarian motorway M3, increasing the parking spaces from 60 to 80 at silver level standard.

All four truck parking areas are quite secure and benefit from the latest tech system ITS ecosystem, in line with the rules from Directive 2010/40/EU, Delegated Regulation 885/2013/EU, Regulation 1012/2022/EU.

The expedition of “SecureNetwork” encountered its share of challenges, notably driven by archaeological excavations at the Kiskunfélegyháza site. Unearthing an archaeological site spanning 2 hectares in Kiskunfélegyháza revealed a 13th-century shepherd’s village, complete with traces of houses, animal stalls, and an array of artifacts. These discoveries, along with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic posed setbacks affecting the project’s timeline.

Nevertheless, the project promoters displayed unwavering dedication to keeping the initiative on course and successfully achieved the project’s objectives!

The grand opening of these Gold-level SSTPAs was an event to remember and benefited from the presence of several local, regional, and national stakeholders.

In fact, Bivak KFT commemorated the grand opening of the SSTPAs in Kiskunfélegyháza on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, providing valuable insights into the project’s journey, elaborating on its evolution, challenges, modifications, and eventual success. While Trans Combi SRL celebrated the inauguration of the Curtici SSTPA on September 28, 2023, emphasizing the significant support received from the European Union, they highlighted the project’s importance to Curtici.

As this journey through the triumphs and challenges of the “SecureNetwork” and related projects comes to a close, it’s heartening to see the positive impact these initiatives have made on safe and secure truck parking areas in Hungary and Romania.

This project not only signifies the successful implementation of state-of-the-art solutions and compliance with EU regulations but also underscore the importance of collaboration and adaptability in overcoming challenges, serving as an inspiration for the broader European community.

Safe travels ahead!
