First SSTPAs in Greece Ready to Go !

The first Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas in Greece are ready and operational at Aerino, on 306.5KM of the A1 motorway (part of the E-75 motorway).

The first safe and secure parking areas in Greece are located halfway between Athens and Thessaloniki (Greece’s largest cities) and are completely new sites, created specifically for the truck drivers.

Until 2023, Greek motorways did not provide any safe and secure areas for the trucks, forcing drivers to stop in lay-by areas along the motorways for their mandatory break and rest. The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport invited all Greek Motorways to participate in a joint EU-funded project for the development of Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas in 2020. Aegean Motorway S.A. responded to this invitation by proposing the development of two such sites in Aerino (one per direction).

Aerino SSTPAs are constructed and operated by Aegean Motorway S.A. and include (in each direction):

  • Total area of approximately 18,000 square meters,
  • 36 secure truck parking spaces (9 spaces accommodating refrigerated trucks)
  • Drivers’ lounge area (indoor and outdoor area with TV, tables and chairs, food & beverages vending machines, water cooler etc.),
  • WC for men / women,
  • Showers for men / women
  • Parking system, with entry/exit bars and automatic payment counters
  • On-line booking application (operational by April 2024)

The facilities are designed to meet Silver level requirements of the EU-Parking Standard (certification process scheduled for early April 2024):

  • 24-hour monitoring system,
  • Controlled entry/exit,
  • Appropriate fencing, lighting and signage.

Both SSTPAs have been introduced to drivers since November 2023 for a trial period.
