The European Parliament supports the reform of the EU Driving Licence Directive

In a vote held today (28 February 2024), the European Parliament’s plenary supported (Oeil / Report / Voting results) the reform of the EU Driving Licence Directive, with a number of specific proposals to apply to truck drivers, among which:

  • possibility to start driving professionally trucks from the age of 17, when duly accompanied by another experienced professional driver;
  • establishing the minimum age of professional truck drivers at 18 for national and international transport, on the conditions that drivers have undergone a full CPC professional training;
  • creation of an EU mechanism to recognise third country driving licences and certificates for professional competence.

The two legislators (Council and Parliament) have now to sit together after the European elections in June, and find a compromise between their positions, bearing in mind that the Council is less inclined to support such changes.
