Walter Charpentier is the CEO of TWV, a transport and logistics company based in Hauts-de-France in operation since 2001. They operate across Europe in express freight and groupage. According to Walter, France should increase awareness of road safety and work to prevent illegal truck parking, which exposes drivers to dangerous areas. Like in England, it should be mandatory for trucks to park in secure areas, ensuring the safety of both drivers and other road users.

Infrastructure Must Focus on People First

For Walter, it is crucial to require infrastructure developers to prioritize human well-being in order to reduce accidents and improve working conditions for drivers.

“We must stop the construction of so-called “secured” parking areas that are only safe in name, without real attention to driver comfort and services.

We need to establish a clear set of standards that genuinely classify parking areas, similar to how hotels and restaurants are rated. Basing rankings solely on security is not enough. Other key factors should also be considered, such as the quality of equipment and infrastructure, the services provided (restaurants, WiFi, activities, relaxation facilities), and the overall comfort and the atmosphere of the parking area.”

This change is essential to ensure that drivers have well-equipped spaces suited to their needs and to improve their quality of life on the road, Walter says.
